The central premise of XLIFF 2.0 is the ability to interchange localization data with any tool or system, with the promise of guaranteed fidelity. XLIFF 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the XLIFF 1.2 standard. Unfortunately, XLIFF 1.2 became a victim of its own success - its design was so broad and flexible that no two versions of XLIFF 1.2 were alike, rendering the core concept of the standard (interoperability) ill-fated. Even today, most localization companies and tools will claim to support XLIFF (followed by special terms and conditions). We've been here before - the original XLIFF standard was intended to be a kitchen-sink standard: all things to all people. So, what's the chance of success for the newest standard on the block - XLIFF 2.0? New and improved - brand new recipe! Time and again, promising new standards have offered so much, but ultimately fallen short. The fractured localization standards landscape follows this pattern, offering bewildering, yet unfulfilling options. From innumerable roll-your-own machine translation solutions to myriad ways of measuring quality, it's hard to find common, stable working practices. The localization industry is known for its continuous wheel reinvention.
